Haledon Safety Day 2009
May 24th, 2009
Haledon’s first Safety day was a success. Attendance is estimated to be approximately 150-200 people. Over 34 bicycle helmets , donated by the David Hammer Foundation (valued at over $1,000) were given out to children. Several other raffles were also a hit, but the most popular was a ride to school in a police car! Children enjoyed visits from Smokey the Bear during the day. Children had the opportunity to sit in Police cars, ambulances and fire trucks as well as tour the police department. Children got to try on real bullet proof vests and be fingerprinted. There was also a maze to teach children how to get out if a building was on fire. Free Fire alarms were given out to residents as well. Many kids also visited the craft area where they could make police badges or 911 bear magnets. Safety information was also available for parents on safety topics such as: strangers, internet, bikes, guns, fire and car seat safety. Parents also had the opportunity to sign up to have a police officer check car seats are properly installed in their car.
Overall, it was a great opportunity for public interaction with Haledon Police Department. We look forward to an even more successful safety day next year.
